Install mosquito traps in public areas to control dengue

SHAH ALAM, 5 Aug: The installation of mosquito traps in areas under the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) is under studies, including a step to prevent the spread of dengue.

The MPS Public Health Division Head, Zulkifli Ariffin, said that ovitraps were installed in ten public areas since the middle of last year, incliuding the Selayang Stadium, supermarkets and government offices.

He said reducing the outbreak is not the main objective, but as an effort to prevent outbreaks in focus places.

“We can not put the scale of the decline as a benchmark for case studies because outbreaks are due to the location and the weather.

“At least 30 devices were installed in each location and varies depending on the locality and logistics. However, the number ten areas remained since the study was conducted, “he said, citing the Sinar Harian.

He said that from epid 29, 19 hotspots listed showed an increase compared to the previous week.

“A total of 12 hotspots were listed in week 27 and increased to 17 in week 28 with the total number of cases being 2,995, and five deaths.

“Fogging and inspection are being carried out at premises and houses, especially for areas listed as hotspot,” he said.

The Selayang Baru JKKK Chairman, Jumari Talip said that six out of eight locations in Selayang Baru were re-listed as hotspots after two months.

“We are starting to move again and distribution campaign leaflets on outbreak control in public and from house to house to raise public awareness as there are cases involving residential units.

“The appointment of new waste management contractors is among the contributing factors which lead to unsanitary environmental conditions and outbreaks. But the problem has bee seen to recover in recently,” he said.
