Azmin: ‘Dark Day’ for parliamentary democracy

SHAH ALAM, 22 Oct: The suspension of six months imposed on the Gelang Patah Member of Parliament, Lim Kit Siang, in the Dewan Rakyat marks another ‘dark day’ for parliamentary democracy.

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that the suspension decision was the lower the position of the Dewan Rakyat and shows how Umno-BN representatives cannot separate politics from parliamentary democracy.

“Voting will be in favour of Umno to suspend Lim for refusing to apologise for the statement that allegedly insulted the Speaker on the 1MDB scandal. They have lost a sense of what is right and wrong, and has abandoned the doctrine of duty for members to speak out for truth.

“Instead, they allow partisan politics and revenge to be above justice,” said the Gombak Member of Parliament in a statement.

The Gelang Patah Member of Parliament, Lim Kit Siang, was suspended for 6 months from the Dewan Rakyat after the motion tabled by Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said was passed by the majority of Parliamentarians today.

The motions brought to suspend is according to Standing Order 27 (3).

The Deputy Speaker, Ronald Kiandee, announced the decision to suspend through a vote of block with a majority of 107 Dewan Rakyat members supporting the motion and 77 not supporting it.
