Single Mother Raises 15 Children By Selling ‘Kuih’

TANJUNG KARANG, 30 Mar: The persistence and patience in educating 15 children till they have succeeded despite losing her husband has gained the attention of the Selangor Women’s Welfare and Charity Organisation (PEKAWANIS).

Yesterday Miskanah Harun, 67, was awarded the Single Mothers Distinguished Personality (Tokoh) award for her dedication and honour of raising her children by selling ‘kuih’ around Seri Tiram Jaya.

Miskanah said that the struggle of bringing up 15 children after her husband died 26 years ago was filled with hardship.

“God only knows the hardship I suffered. I sold ‘kuih’ to cover my family’s expenses. My children are now all successful,” she said when met.

Apart from Miskanah, two other women received their respective awards for Most Exemplary Mother Award, Tusiah Kajar, 63 and Housewife Figure, Musirah Dollah, 62.

The awards were presented by PEKAWANIS President, Puan Sri Salbiah Tunut. Also present was the Permatang Legislative Assembly Coordinator, Yahya Sahri.

According to Tusiah, the first thing she instilled in her children is religious education because it is the root of an individual’s life.

“I have 11 children, all are successful in their respective fields,” said the mother from Kampung Sungai Yu.

Also receiving awards were Rozita Askur for Woman of Agricultural Effort; Sarimah Salim for Entrepreneurial Woman, and Salmi Ismail for Woman of Ranching Efforts.

Meanwhile, Salbiah advised women, especially from rural areas to seek to raise revenue as housewives.

“We now have the Edible Garden programmes where we can generate agricultural income.

“Apart from that, we can also make use of natural resources (land) well,” said Salbiah, also the wife of Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

She added that the State Government encourages housewives to become entrepreneurs.
