Haze: Beware of current API, prioritise health

SHAH ALAM, 13 Sept: The Community Service Centre Office in each State Legislative Assembly (DUN) is hoped to be proactive in using existing provisions and to distribute masks to the residents in their respective areas as needed.

The Exco for Health, Dr Daroyah Alwi, said that the public is advised to be vigilant and concerned about the current Air Pollution Index (API) readings to prevent them from being exposed to a variety of risks that can affect health.

She said that in Selangor, until this morning, Banting recorded the highest API readings which is 143 followed by Port Klang (139), Shah Alam (131), Petaling Jaya (127) and Kuala Selangor (102).

“The haze has adverse impact on everyone, especially high-risk groups such as children, senior citizens and those with illnesses such as asthma, lung and heart diseases.

“The people have been urged to increase water intake and reduce outdoor activities. For patients taking medication, it is advised to take medicine regularly and in case of any breathing problems, immediately see a doctor,” said Dr Daroyah in a press statement.

Dr Daroyah said that it is hoped that smokers will also reduce smoking and to avoid smoking in closed areas such as houses.

“Throwing un-extinguished cigarette butts everywhere could also lead to open burning which may make this problem worse.

“Motorists are also advised to keep a safe distance between vehicles and avoid driving when visibility gets bad,” she said.
