SHAH ALAM, 9 Sept: The statistics for the Selangor Microcredit Scheme (Skimsel) repayment among rural participants achieved over 90 percent so far.

The Chairman of the Poverty Eradication Select Committee, Saari Sungib, said that the latest statistics give a positive sign in achieving the objectives of eradicating poverty.

“This is a good sign that there is an improvement in the living standards of the participants of this scheme when they can repay the loan with discipline.

“It also shows desire and determination that they are working to improve their income,” he said.

Saari said this to Selangor Kini after chairing the closed hearing for the Poverty Eradication Select Committee at the Meeting Room, Annex Building, yesterday.

Saari, who is also the Hulu Kelang Assemblyman, said that this is different from the percentage of repayment for participants of the Urban Poor Microcredit Programme (Mimbar), which is still considered to be low.

Saari explained that they are also taking into account various factors, including recommendations to improve the delivery system to increase participation and repayment ability among Mimbar participants.

“Among the causes of the low percentage of repayment is that the attitude of some participants who only want to take opportunity to use these funds for other purposes apart from expanding their businesses,” he said.
