The Selangor Squash Championship to unearth new talent

SHAH ALAM, 24 Sept: 216 teenage participants between the ages of nine to 19 will compete in the Selangor Closed Squash Championship 2015.

The Selangor Squash Association President, Farid Yunus, said that the championship that will take place from 22 to 26 September could be the track to unearth new talent in the sport.

He said that the response towards the event is also encouraging compared to last year where 166 people participated.

“The championship is a stage for players to showcase their abilities and skills. The player that wins the championship this time will have the opportunity to represent Selangor a well as the national circuit and the Malaysian Games (Sukma).

“We also intend to produce world-class squash champions like Datuk Nicole David,” he said in a statement.

He said that the six categories being contested are under 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19.

Among those expected to steal the show are Muhammad Haris Ramlee, 14, who won several international tournaments such a the Australian Open, the Japan Open and the Borneo Open.

“The winner will receive a medal, RM1,000 cash and sponsorship items, while the runner-up will receive a medal, RM350 cash and sponsorship items, while third place will receive a medal and RM150 cash,” he said.

The event also received sponsorship worth RM36,428 from Kumpulan Perangsang Selangor Berhad (Perangsang Selangor).
