Review before absorbing GST to prevent local authority revenue from being affected

SHAH ALAM, 14 May: A thorough study should be carried out by the Selangor government before proposing to absorb the goods and services tax (GST).

“Contractors charge GST to local authorities, so in what way can we keep revenue if we do not want to impose the GST on taxpayers?

“So, we have to think of ways so that it does not affect the income of local authorities, without burdening the people,” said the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) Member, Chia Yew Ken.

Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Member, Anizan Othman said that the GST should not be imposed on any party, not local authorities.

“We are still not able to, it does not make sense. The GST should be abolished once and for all for the sake of the people,” he told Selangor Kini.

The same opinion was agreed by a Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Member, R Sugumaran, who described the GST as troublesome.

“We are consistent with the Selangor government’s stance to reject the GST,” he said.
