CM: Letter asking for GST exemption for local authorities sent

SHAH ALAM, 13 May: A letter was sent to the Ministry of Finance asking for an exemption of the goods and services tax (GST) for local authorities.

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that the move was taken following the decision made at the Exco meeting today.

“If this can be taken into consideration, we can adjust it across all local authorities.

“The State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) was ordered to carry out a study and revision of financial implications if the state government absorbs this GST in the interest of the people,” said Mohamed Azmin.

He said this during the book launch of “Khalifah Umar Abdul Aziz” by Dr Ali Muhammad As-Shallabi at the Concorde Hotel today.

He explained that the financial implication study is important to ensure the amount of tax that the state government needs to absorb.

Mohamed Azmin added that the situation in Selangor is much different from Penang, which only has two local authorities compared to 12 local authorities in Selangor.

“Most of the local authorities are in urban areas which certainly requires a review of the financial implications if it is borne by the state government,” said Mohamed Azmin.
