Employers should be concerned about providing breastfeeding rooms

SHAH ALAM, 28 Apr: The importance of breastfeeding rooms for working women should be given attention by employers to protect the welfare of female employees.

The Exco for Health, Welfare, Women and Family Development, Dr Daroyah Alwi, said that the facility has been given less encouraging attention, especially in the workplace.

Daroyah said that breastfeeding is very important starting from the birth of a child until a child is about two years of age.

“For working women, they need facilities and space at work to pump breast-milk for storage at the babysitter’s home.

“Because the advantages of children who are on breast-milk include being rarely sick or catch a fever and they do not have to regularly see the doctor,” she said when contacted by Selangor Kini.

Daroyah said that employers should play a key role in providing a comfortable space to continue the practice of breastfeeding at the workplace.

“Therefore, working women would be calmer in carrying out their duties at the work place and do not have to take leave to take care of children who often fall sick or catch a fever.
