SHAH ALAM, 2 Apr: The problem of leakages and corruption that prevails in Putrajaya’s administration should be solved before the central government takes the stand to implement the goods and services tax (GST) system which burdens the people.
The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that the central government does not under the concept of the GST by only assuming that the implementation of the tax system can increase the national income.
Instead, he said that the goal of the GST is to create a tax system that is comprehensive and fair to the taxpayers.
“If Barisan Nasional (BN) wants to increase revenue, they should look into leakages and corruption happening.
“According to the Finance Minister, when the GST was introduced on April 1, 2015, the national income will increase by RM27 million when the Auditor-General’s report stated that leakages, wastage and corruption that has occurred amounts to over RM20 billion.
“Solve it first, plug up the leakages, do not tax the people,” he said during the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) session today.
In the meantime, Mohamed Azmin (PKR-Bukit Antarabangsa) also criticised the statement of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who claimed that the implementation of the GST is Halal and in accordance with the Fatwa.
He also questioned the purchase of the private jet which is deemed to be inappropriate, especially when the people are currently burdened with a regressive tax system.
“The Prime Minister said that the GST is Halal, but when purchasing the jet he did not refer to the Fatwa.
“Before the GST is implemented, sell the private jet first, then only implement it. Plug up the leakages, only then impose the tax.
“Tax should be imposed on the rich and not the poor people. On this principle, I declare that the state government rejects the implementation of the GST by Barisan Nasional (BN),” he added.
