KUCHING, 4 Mar: Selangor will adopt the Sarawak government’s success in maintaining religious harmony in the pluralistic society in the state’s administration.
The Chief Minister of Selangor, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that the effort is being taken to ensure that the people of different races, cultures and religions in Selangor live in peace and harmony, thus rejecting religious extremism.
He said that religious diversity is a very important asset in the effort to develop the state and country.
“We will emulate Sarawak in this matter. Although 40 percent of the people in Sarawak are non-Muslims, they can maintain harmony in their daily lives.
“On the contrary, in Selangor, the percentage of non-Muslims is lesser, but such a situation is hard to be achieved,” he told Selangor Kini.
They managed to discuss this desire in depth during a courtesy visit to the office of the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Tan Sri Datuk Adenan Satem, yesterday.
The opportunity to lead the Selangor delegation to Sarawak for three days began on March 1, and it was fully utilised when Mohamed Azmin met with the Chairman of ACS, Most Reverend Archbishop Datuk Bolly Lapok at his official residence at the St Thomas Cathedral.
During the brief meeting, he discussed with Bolly to organise inter-religious dialogues more often so that the Muslim and Christian communities can understand each other.
“Of course the roles of Muslims and Christians are important to organise such meetings so that the future generation can understand the importance of understanding and awareness about their respective religions.
“This effort will also find a better point of understanding to create a harmonious environment in a pluralistic society,” he said.
A meeting was also held with church leaders of Sarawak, led by the Chairman of the Kuching Ministers Fellowship, Senior Pastor Darren Tan, in a closed event at the Sarawak Club on March 2.
