CM: Water agreement ends, will not be continued

KUALA LUMPUR, 9 Mar: The master agreement on the Selangor water restructuring between the state government and the central government ends today and will not be resumed after a second delay.

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that the central government ‘violated the terms’ of the agreement that was signed in September 2014, causing the state government to not have any other choice.

“When I became the Chief Minister in September last year, I was ready to proceed with the agreement, but the federal government failed to fulfil it and in fact asked for an extension.

“What choice do we have? I want to see the new terms that they want to discuss with the state government,” said Mohamed Azmin at the Parliament lobby today.

He said that the same thing also happened with the Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (KIDEX) project, which was cancelled.

“Similarly with the KIDEX project. Only after we cancelled it, the Transport Minister came to discuss about the public transport plan,” he said.

The Selangor government previously gave an extension twice starting from January.

On September 12, 2014, the federal government and the Selangor government signed the Heads of Agreement to finalise the restructuring of the water supply industry.

With the agreement signed, Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (ASSB), a new entity, will take over operations and maintenance of water treatment plants and water supply services that were previously carried out by four concessionaires.
