Be careful of dengue outbreak during El-Nino period

SHAH ALAM, 14 JUNE: To avoid the spread and breeding of aedes mosquitoes, the public is advised to maintain cleanliness within their own compound.

Aedes mosquitoes are still able to breed in any space that stores water, even during the current hot and dry season due to El-Nino, said state Health Exco, Dr. Daroyah Alwi.

“The state government through the Local Authorities is committed with its efforts to suppress dengue fever from spreading by cleaning up and destroying hot spots where aedes mosquitoes breed.

“There are a few techniques to eradicate aedes mosquitoes which is by using Mist spray, destroying larvae’s, more awareness campaigns, and “gotong-royong” (community co-operation),” he said in a statement in conjunction with the celebration of World ASEAN Dengue Day on every 15th June.

Dr. Daroyah requests that everyone in their communities shall contribute and assist each other to make sure their surroundings are always clean and free from dengue.

Selangor currently tops the list among all states in Malaysia where 22,060 dengue cases has been recorded up till 8 June 2014 with 29 deaths.

Massive increases of cases were up to 366 percent as compared to only 4,734 cases reported during the same time frame last year.The total amount of cases recorded in the entire year of 2013 is only at 23,852 cases.

Meanwhile, 53 areas were identified as dengue hot spots in Selangor while Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) managed to record the highest number of hot spots which is at 17 areas.
