20 pumps placed at 9 pools, Selangor’s preparation to face the El Nino

SHAH ALAM, 25 June: A total of 20 pumps have been placed at nine water source pools as the State Government’s preparation to face the El Nino phenomenon, which is expected to last until September this year.

The Executive Councillor for Youth and Sports, Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, said that the State Government, through the coordinator of the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS), has ordered the pumping of water out to Sungai Selangor and dams since a week ago, based on the increased demand and the demanding water conditions.

He said that the initial production of 400 million litres of water (MLD) then increased to 650 MLD and the estimated capacity depends on the water levels at rivers or dams.

“It takes about 20 hours for water to be pumped into the dams. The maximum amount of water pumped may reach up to 800 MLD, however for now, 650 MLD is sufficient,” he said, quoted from Sinar Harian.

In relation to that, Yunus said that at this moment, it is guaranteed that the supply is sufficient for the next four to five months.

“So, the people do not have to worry, because if the existing water is not enough, we will increase it,” he said.

On the LUAS website, there has been no increase in dam levels for three weeks of this month, except for the Semenyih Dam, with a rate of around one to three percent only.

However, five dams – Batu, Klang Gates, Langat, SUngai Selangor and Tasek Subang – saw a decline over the past three weeks of around one to four percent.

Meanwhile, for the Sungai Tinggi dam, the reading was around 70.93 percent, but declined to a lower level after the first week to 68.93 percent.

Prior to this, the State Government used mine water to resolve the water rationing, which took place in February, by channelling mine water to the river.
