SHAH ALAM, 7 May: The Selangor Water Management Authority (SWMA) will not hesitate to take legal action on those found to give a false perception regarding the quality of raw and treated water channeled to the residents in the Klang Valley.
The Director of SWMA, Md Khairi Selamat, said that the research carried out by consultants appointed since 2011 found that parameters of heavy metals in alternative pools are safe and complies with the standards set.
He said that the report of raw water quality recorded by Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) also found that there were no violations recorded for the parameters of heavy metals in March.
“SWMA is constantly monitoring to ensure that the quality of raw water is in compliance with the standards set to be treated by water treatment plants (WTP) and is safe to be used by the public.
“Therefore, we will not hesitate to take legal action of parties who deliberately or give a wrong perception of the treated and raw water quality,” he said at a press conference at the Selangor State Government Secretary (SUK) Building today.
Md Khairi said that the pools of alternative source of water have been identified since 2009 and a series of pool water sampling have been conducted by the Selangor Health Department since 2011.
He said that 27 parameters have been tested, covering physical categories, metal and heavy metals, with analysis results showing that the parameters of heavy metals in the pools do not exceed the limit set by the Malaysian Ministry of Health.
“Sampling was done on May 2 on five mining ponds, namely the Kambing Susu pond, KL-Larut pond, Hang Tuah 1 pond, Hang Tuah 2 pond, Rasa pond and one sampling of Sungai Selangor.
“These samples were sent to the Chemical Department and a third party laboratory which accredited, ALS Technicam (M) Sdn Bhd.
“While some parameters exceed standards set, however it can be treated by WTPs,” he said.
