Explore new ways to achieve 80% in waste services in 2016

SHAH ALAM, 11 Sept: The quality of waste collection, especially services and collection target in Selangor, should be increased to 80 percent by 2016.

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that new more effective methods should be explored to ensure the fertility and value of the soil that is very valuable in Selangor.

He said that conventional methods of throwing waste in landfills only contribute to the degradation of the environment and the destruction of the land fertility.

“This could be a permanent economic loss. I suggest for us to revisit efforts to adopt new and better technologies,” he said.

He said this at the opening of the ‘Beyond 3R : A More Sustainable Solution For Selangor Waste Management’ seminar at the Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC) yesterday.

As waste consists of various categories, Mohamed Azmin suggested that it should be treated differently with the involvement of everyone to make it a success.

“Special solid waste management methods requires quality management by the state government, therefore we have to consider more sophisticated technology.

“The technology to generate energy from organic waste should be discussed because at the moment we often damage and destroy fertility, and even the soil value of the landfills itself,” he said.

He explained that outdated notions of waste should also be corrected because it can be a source of energy and has a high economic value.
