CM Issue: Party presidents entitled to nominate more than two names

SHAH ALAM, 6 Sept: Every president in Pakatan Rakyat (PR) parties are entitled to nominate more than two names for the new Selangor Chief Minister as commanded by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, in his letter recently.

The PAS President, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, said that the Sultan’s letter was addressed to each party leader and not Committee Members.

He said that based on the constitution agreed in PAS, the president has the right to make any decision without consulting with their members in advance.

“Party members have to support the President’s decision, because as long as we have governed since 1959, the Chief Minister’s position has never been creased by Central PAS committee.

“Party presidents make the decision and do not require (permission) from the Central PAS committee,” he said at the Dialogue and Clarification of Current Issues with the PAS President at the Tok Guru Rusila Hall yesterday.

In relation to the move by PAS of sending more than one candidate’s name causing unease among PKR and DAP leaders, Abdul Hadi said that it was done based on the command and desire of the Sultan of Selangor.

He said that PAS cannot just send one name because it would cause HRH the Sultan to not have any other choice.

“If the Sultan has no choice, then we are wrong in terms of discretion.

“That is why we placed other names, but it was rejected by PKR and DAP.

“If they have rejected, then it is up to PAS because they cannot tie us down as the Sultan sent letters to each of the leader, so it is our respective right,” he added.

PAS previously confirmed that they sent the two PKR Assemblymen’s names and one for the party itself as the candidates for the new Chief Minister of Selangor.

The PAS Secretary General, Datuk Mustafa Ali, confirmed the matter, however did not mention the names of the three Assemblymen.
