Two Pumps Started Operation 12 Hours a Day, River Flow is at Optimum

SHAH ALAM, 28 Apr: Two pumps, with a capacity of 570 million litres per second, are operating at Sungai Selangor to optimise the balance of water flow to be stored at the Hang Tuah pool.

The Executive Councillor for Youth and Sports, Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, said that five more units will be installed and are scheduled to commence operations on April 29.

He said the total capacity of water to be pumped is 172 million litres per day (MLD), equivalent to 11 percent of the remaining flow at the Bestari Jaya Barrage in April 2014.

“The total rainfall received in downstream catchment areas help decrease the dam’s rate of release. 53,100 million litres of residual flow has been recorded at the Bestari Jaya Barrage throughout April.

“On average, there is 1,966 MLD of residual flow at the Sungai Selangor each day,” he said at a special press conference on the capacity of dams today.

When the river flow is low, Yunus Hairi said, 100 MLD from the Hang Tuah pool will be pumped into Sungai Selangor to meet the water treatment plant (WTP).

“The total capacity of all alternative reservoirs, including the Hang Tuah pool at the Sungai Selangor Basin, is 61.28 million cubic metres.

“This amount is sufficient to be used to increase the river flow is there is no rain for five months, at a pumping rate of 537.16 MLD,” he said.
