FOMCA: Ensure Water Industry Restructuring is Accelerated

PETALING JAYA, 23 Apr: The Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (FOMCA) and Forum Air Malaysia (FAM) want the restructuring of the water industry to be accelerated.

The Secretary-General of Forum Air Malaysia, N Ratna Devi, said that all parties should work together to ensure that the restructuring is implemented in less than 12 months.

She said that consumers should not have to accept the burden from inefficient management of supply and distribution of water, as well as the inability of responsible parties to provide adequate water supply.

“We have heard media reports that one of the water supply companies in Selangor may be taking legal action.

“This is an example of an incident Selangor which could affect the process of the restructuring water industry,” she said at a press conference at the SKPPK Building at Sungai Wei here.

Also present was the CEO of the Federation of Malaysian of Consumer Associations (FOMCA), Datuk Paul Selva Raj and the FOMCA Deputy Secretary-General.

Meanwhile, Paul Selva said the delay in settlement from some parties represent more political interest than consumer interests.

“The interests of the people should be placed first but it is not shown by some in this issue,” he said.

Previously, the State Government signed an agreement with the Federal Government, which saw Selangor granting permission to implement the restructuring of the water industry.

In return, the Selangor Government is ready to give permission for the Langat 2 project to be implemented.

The State Government offered RM9.65 billion for the acquisition of four concession companies in the state.
