KELANA JAYA, SEP 21: The public is advised to take their own initiatives to proactively ensure their residential areas are not Aedes mosquito breeding grounds.

Damansara Utama Assemblyman Yeo Bee Yin said if the community wishes to stop the spread of dengue and Zika virus, they first have take action to eliminate Aedes mosquitoes, as both diseases come from this same mosquito.

“The government is often blamed for dengue and Zika cases because public areas are not clean.

“However, a study by the District Health Office found that in most cases, the source is the patient’s home. Residents themselves need to take their own initiatives to destroy the mosquito’s breeding grounds by ensuring that there is no stagnant water that would allow mosquito larvae to breed,” she said.

She said that to SelangorKini after the Anti-Zika and Dengue Campaign at Taman Bahagia LRT, on September 21.

She said dengue cases in several hotspots have been declining, like in SS21 with just 2 cases, SS22 (4 cases), SS25 (2 cases) dan SS17A (4 cases).

Besides, residents are also advised to get mosquito repellent, lotion or spray to prevent mosquito bites.

“Wearing a bracelet, sticker or repellent clip does not provide full protection, as compared to lotions or sprays.

“Residents who are going to Zika-exposed places, such as Singapore, are advised to use repellents to protect themselves from aedes mosquito bites,” she said.
