Over 1000 Join MBSA Earth Hour Night Cycle

SHAH ALAM, 31 Mar: The drizzle during the weekend did not prevent about 1,000 people from participating in the Night Cycle in conjunction with the 60 Earth Hour Programme organised by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA).

Its Vice Corporate Director, Shahrin Ahmad, said that the cycling programme is among the ongoing efforts by MBSA to raise the community’s awareness to be concerned with environmental issues, especially global warming.

He said that apart from the cycle, the programme tonight also witnessed lights that are not main lights in private buildings and government buildings around the city centre being turned off for an hour staring 8.30pm.

“To honour the tragedy that happened to the passengers and crew ow MH370, MBSA did not hold entertainment oriented activities.

“Instead, a poetry event dedicated specially to the families, passengers and crew of the flight was held, and the MBSA Mayor, Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan, read a poem titled ‘Ruisi Rindu Untuk Anakanda’,” he said in a statement.

On 29 March, MBSA organised a special programme in conjunction with Earth Hour, held at Dataran Shah Alam with many other activities.

“Hopefully, this programme was able to educate the community to not pollute and to be more responsible in protecting the environment on the face of this earth.

“I hope that everyone realises the importance for the earth to be preserved and loved for the survival of mankind in the future,” he said.

In addition to cycling and reading poetry, MBSA also provided special signboards for visitors to grieve and write words of encouragement, as well as prayers, for the families, crew and passengers of flight MH370, which was announced to have ended in the Indian Ocean last week.

Visitors were also entertained by a children’s colouring contest with the theme “Doing Good to the Earth”, a lucky draw and skateboard and BMX bicycle demonstration, as well as graffiti art.

In addition, the MBSA Local Agenda Unit also provided a special space with an environment theme to make it easier for visitors to express words of support and slogans on saving the earth and the environment.

There were also three special booths selling cycling accessories and equipment for lovers of cycling.
