Anwar: Umno Evil, Increases Imprisonment to 10 Years

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 May: The Public Prosecutor in the Defamation II case which Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is facing is believed to seek for the sentence against him to be increased from five years to 10 years.

Anwar said that this matter was made known to him by a source which he did not mention.

“I received information that they will seek for my jail sentence to be increased from five to 10 years.

“This is Umno; evil-minded. They are not even satisfied with five years. They use the judiciary institution,” said Anwar in front of about 50,000 participants of a peaceful assembly, the May 1 Assembly 2014 at Dataran Merdeka.

Anwar added that the same fate was also suffered by the late Karpal Singh, who was sentenced to jail previously on charges of sedition in the Perak Constitutional crisis.

“Karpal was a tenacious fighter who fought to protect the people. Umno was not even satisfied and was heartless with him being in a wheelchair,” Anwar added.

Meanwhile, the PKR Secretary-General, Datuk Saifuddin Nasution, urged the public to attend the Defamation II trial at the Federal Court.

Touching on the issue of the increasing national debt, Saifuddin said that debt during the era of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak exceeds the total national debt during the era of Tunku Abd Rahman to the era of Tun Abdullah Badawi.

Meanwhile, he also attributed the success of this rally, which was conducted peacefully, to no provocative action from the police by firing tear gas and chemical spray.
