SHAH ALAM, 9 Apr: The state government is committed to achieving the target of appointing 30 percent female council members for local authorities in Selangor in the near future.
The Exco for Local Government, Legalising Illegal Factories and New Village Development, Ean Yong Hian Wah (DAP-Seri Kembangan), said that it is in line with the policy decided by the state government which has been implemented since 2013.
“However, the number of female council members depends on the nominations submitted by Pakatan Rakyat (PR) component parties and in this case, council members to be appointed must meet the criteria set, regardless whether they are male or female.
“The state government will remain committed to ensuring that this policy can be achieved in the near future,” he said, answering a verbal question from Rodziah Ismail (PKR-Batu Tiga) during the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) session today.
He said that currently there are 58 female council members representing 21.74 percent of the total council members appointed as of February 17.
“Of the total, the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) and the Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS) are ahead of the rest with each appointing seven female council members, followed by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) and the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) (six),” he said.
Meanwhile, other local authorities are the Sepang Municipal Council (MPSp) and the Sabak Bernam District Council (MDSB) (five); the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ), Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) and the Kuala Langat District Council (MDKL) (four); as well as the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and the Kuala Selangor District Council (MDKS) (three).
The total number of council members appointed is 275, involving a total of 217 men.
