Federal Court: Dr Khir imprisoned for a year

SHAH ALAM, 29 Sept: The Federal Court upheld the 12 month prison sentence against the former Chief Minister of Selangor, Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo, for the charge of using his powers to acquire land and a bungalow in Shah Alam in 2007.

He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum prison sentence of two years or a fine or both.

On September 22, a panel of five judges of the Federal Court, chaired by the Malayan Chief Judge, Tan Sri Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin, upheld the conviction against Dr Khir but postponed his decision on the sentence to September 29.

The Federal Court also upheld the High Court’s order for the property to be forfeited and handed over to the government.

Previously, the Shah Alam High Court found Momahad Khir guilty for obtaining for himself and his wife, Zahrah Kechik, two plots of land and a bungalow in Section 7, Shah Alam, from Ditamas Sdn Bhd, through its Director, Datuk Shamsuddin Hayroni.

The property was bought at RM3.5 million when Ditamas paid RM6.5 million for the property on 23 December 2004.

The former Sungai Panjang Assemblyman was charged of the offence at the official residence of the Chief Minister of Selangor at Jalan Permata 7/1, Seksyen 7, Shah Alam, on 29 Mei 2007.
