KUALA LUMPUR, June 14: More than 1,000 Muslims marched and rallied in front of the Syrian embassy in Kuala Lumpur to protest against President Bashar Assad’s atrocities against the people of that country.
This protest was held in response to the Chairman of the World Union of Muslim Scholars, Prof. Dr. Yusuf Al-Qaradawi who called Muslims from all over the world to make today as a “Day for Syria”.
Leading the protest was PAS Vice-President, Salahudin Ayub, PAS youth Chief, Nasrudin Hassan, his Deputy, Nik Abduh Nik Aziz and PAS Youth Information Chief, Riduan Mohd Nor.
Also present were members of the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) NGO as well as the Peninsula Muslim Student Coalition (Gamis).
The memorandum delegation began after the Friday prayers at the Tabung Haji Mosque and they marched more than two kilometres to the Syrian embassy building.
The conflict in Syria which has lasted for two years has resulted in the loss of 94,000 lives.
The assembly also received help from the police who controlled the situation.
Three representives; Salahudin, Nasrudin, and Nik Abduh tried to go in to hand over the memorandum to a representative of the Syrian embassy.
However, the embassy representative refused to accept the memorandum.
Among the contents of the memorandum were demands for Bashar to return to the negotiating table to resolve the crisis in the troubled country.
In the meantime, Nasrudin who is also the MP for Temerloh condemned the violence and tragedy of deaths of the Muslim community in the country.
“Bashar Assad has shown his arrogance for not accepting the memorandum which we sent.
“We strongly condemn the brutal murder of Muslims in Syria,” he said.
In addition, a memorandum was also sent to the Turkish embassy today to demand an explanation for the street demonstrations which took place in the country.
The memorandum was received by a representative of the Turkish embassy with an explanation that the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan was currently in discussions with a demonstrations group to resolve the upheaval.
