SUBANG JAYA, June 24: The State Government will review the effectiveness of private cleaning contractors appointed by Local Authorities (PBT) in Selangor to ensure their efficiency in executing their work.
Local Government, Studies and Research Exco, Datuk Teng Chang Kim said that consultation and negotiations are underway to improve the efficiency of Local Authorities in Selangor in managing cleaning work in the state.
According to him, the State Government intends to reduce private contractors is the quality rendered still fails to reach a satisfactory level.
“We will review this. We are now in the stage of getting advice on how we can improve the efficiency and performance of local authorities in Selangor by reducing the number of contractors and to employ more workers for the local authorities.
He said this in a press conference during a working visit to the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) today.
As of now, local authorities in Selangor appoints nearly 90 percent of private contractors to help carry out cleaning work such as picking up trash and cutting grass.
Teng said that he was informed that the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) has 3,000 employees and is able to provide satisfactory service.
This contrasts with the local authorities in Selangor where there are fewer employees compared to the larger population.
“The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has a total of 1,300 employees, while MPSJ has 1,4000 employees; less than half the number of workers employed by MPPP.
“In this effort, Penang seems effective, but we are unsure whether the situation is the same in Selangor. That is why we need a study. But of course when we decide to reduce contractors and increase internal staff, we will terminate the contract of contractors that do not perform,” he explained.
He said that the State Government is always concerned with aspects of service quality compared to cost savings if it is to be implemented.
“Cost savings is another aspect, but the main aspect if aimed for local authorities to provide service, not to profit. If profit is acquired, it will be returned to the taxpayer,” he added.
