Proton prices should go down, cars in Korea & China are cheaper

SHAH ALAM, 9 June: The suggestion by the Chairman of PROTON, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, to increase the price of Proton cars has received various criticisms on social networking sites.

A survey by Selangor Kini on Facebook and Twitter found that most of the people do not agree with the proposal.

They claim that the current Proton prices are not in line with the quality of the local car brand.

Some even claimed that the prices of cars in Korea and China are cheaper compared to Malaysia.

For Sudin, the current price of Proton cars is expensive.

However, he said, the quality remains the same and should be sold at a cheaper price, in accordance with the quality.

“The current prices of Proton (cars) are expensive. The quality remains the same.

“Quality should be taken care of, with an affordable price, in this country. Comparing Hyundai Elantra and Proton Preve, the price is not that different,” he said.

In addition, Ab Rahim Abdan, said that the price of Proton cars should be lowered for Malaysians.

Meanwhile, the price of Proton cars abroad should be increased.

“Yes, I agree if the price is increased for overseas markets, but it should be lowered for Malaysians,” he said.

For Liah Abdullah, Proton needs to ensure the quality of their engines is enhanced and to provide trained mechanics at the Proton service centres.

“Before increasing prices, think of the quality of the car, for example, the engine. Trained and professional, as well as trustworthy, mechanics should be provided at service centres,” she said.

Meanwhile, Nusantara Raya is of the opinion that in Korea, the prices of cars are cheaper for its citizens but sold at a higher price in foreign markets.

“It is the opposite here. In Malaysia, for its citizens, it is sold expensively but cheaper in foreign markets. It is the reverse. For the quality of Proton cars, it does not make sense to sell it,” he said.

During a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Mahathir suggested for the car prices to be raised to compete in the world market.

He said that Proton no longer wants to be labelled as a cheap car, therefore, Proton wants to produce world-class cars, but the price needs to be increased.
