Consumers do not have to worry about a repeat of water rationing

SHAH ALAM, 18 June: Consumers in the Klang Valley and Putrajaya do not need to panic about the possibility of the water rationing being repeated because the water capacity at the dams are at satisfactory levels, despite the recent dry weather that has hit the country.

The Executive Councillor in charge of Youth and Sports, Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, said that the existing water supply, including water from alternative pools, is enough to meet the needs of consumers for at least four to five months.

He said that the capacity at alternative pools varies in terms of depth, between seven to ten metres, and the water that consumers usually use is no more than three metres from the pool level.

“Actually, we have studied all the pools and there is ample capacity. So far, we predict that water pools at dams and reservoirs that we have are adequate.

“Sungai Selangor has shown an improvement, but it is very slow, with the latest reading at 43.79 percent,” he told reporters at the Selangor State Assembly lobby.

In the meantime, Yunus also reiterated his statement earlier that the water from pools used is safe and comply with standards set by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia (MOH).

In fact, he said that the water quality at the mines meet international standards, like that of the United Kingdom and Australia.

“Even when we take samples, it is not done lightly because we do it with the Department of Health and I repeat, if the water is not safe for use, we will not give it to the people.

“The water treatment plants (WTP) we have can also treat the capacity of metal in mine water,” he added.

Meanwhile, when commenting on the call for Executive Councillors to drink mine water, Yunus said that the water in question is treated water and not drinking it directly from the mine.

“The issue of drinking water from mines which I meant was mine water that has been treated.

“If we drink directly from the mines, the people would think that our mine water is clean and the people would take it directly from the mines. Then who would be responsible?” he asked.
