‘Drunk Police’, MOHA Should Focus on Fighting Crime

SHAH ALAM, 15 Jan: The incident of policemen going against discipline during duty shows the failure of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) and the police in determining the real focus of the regulatory body to function more efficiently in fighting crime.

The Vice-President of PKR, N.Surendran, said that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) should be fully focused on the real task of the police so that they can provide the best function and not be passionate in ‘attacking’ Pakatan Rakyat leaders.

He said that political interference in police administration may adversely affect the integrity of police officers on duty causing them to lose spirit.

“The IGP should ensure that the police are functioning properly and efficiently in their daily activities,” said Surendran when contacted by Selangor Kini.

Previously, a photo was spread on social networking sites of two policemen who were believed to be under the influence of alcohol while on patrolling duty.

The Selangor Chief of Police, Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahalan, in a statement on the official Selangor Contingent Police Facebook page, said that the identity of the two members have been identified and they have been transferred immediately to a temporary assignment while further investigation is being conducted.

“This is a failure of the MOHA because several incidents have occurred, including the loss of weapons previously and now there is the drunk case and so on. There are also always cases of abuse of detainees.

“All this suggests that the MOHA has failed in ensuring that the police function in a disciplined manner and abides by the law in carrying out their duties,” he said.

Surendran, who is also the Member of Parliament for Padang Serai, also slammed the statement by the Deputy Home Affairs Minister, Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who informed that the police needs a new standard operating procedure (SOP) to overcome this problem.

“It does not make sense that the police needs a new SOP. This is a matter of maintenance and operation of the RMP, and MOHA policies,” he added.
