SHAH ALAM, JUL 29: The State Government’s initiative to create the Jom Baca 10 Minutes programme has now become a catalyst for other states to implement similar programmes.

Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) Chairman Dr Halimah Ali said that the programme is now implemented across the country, emulating Selangor which launched it last April.

“The programme, which has been implemented simultaneously across Selangor, has also been well received across the country.

“This success was driven by the commitment of 850,481 participants in Selangor alone. For the whole country, we have managed to raise over 4 million participants,” he said at the Book Fair 2016 in Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC), here on July 28.

Also present were Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, Education Exco Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Religious Affairs Exco Dato’ Yunus Hairi.

At the same time, Halimah said that the programme’s success proved the PPAS product is well received nationally to increase Malaysians’ reading habits.

“We will continue to lead and be the catalyst of change to encourage the reading habit throughout Malaysia,” he said.

The Jom Baca 10 Minute programme is a move by PPAS to encourage reading at all ages, targeting participation from the civil service, private sector, schools and universities.

It was an idea triggered by PPAS and inspired by Earth Hour to celebrate World Book Day on April 23, each year.
