SHAH ALAM, OCT 18: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) created history when it was named the national winner of WWF – Earth Hour City Challenge (HCC) campaign for the second consecutive year.

MBPJ Deputy Mayor Johary Anuar said the award received in Quito, Ecuador on October 16 was a result of the collaboration between MBPJ and stakeholders to strengthen the civil service structure and implement the low carbon management plan.

“This commitment by MBPJ is a long-term effort to make Petaling Jaya a sustainable city.

“We will continue to educate the public in fostering the habit of preserving nature and instilling the spirit of neighbourliness for mutual benefits,” he said.

Besides Petaling Jaya; Malacca, Selangor and Penang were also selected to represent the country at the EHCC 2016 which lasted for two months from April 26 to June 19.

At least 45 other cities from 21 countries around the world were involved, including Balikpapan, Bogor and Jakarta from Indonesia; Paris, France and Cape Town, South Africa.

This year, Petaling Jaya participated in the We Love Cities public campaign that allowed the public to vote for their favorite city.

“EHCC, among others, aims to mobilise action and support cities around the world to address global climate change and stimulate the development and direction of low-carbon green city,” he said.

MBPJ had previously won the inaugural title of ‘Malaysia’s National Earth Hour Capital’ in the Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC) in 2015.
