SHAH ALAM, OCT 31: The State Government has allocated RM15 million for development and rehabilitation work on the Klang River to turn the river bank into a new source of income.

Dato’ Menteri Besar, Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the Klang River will be promoted worldwide, including the organisation of the Klang River Marathon in 2017.

“The Klang River that has been polluted with rubbish for so long is now getting cleaner. As much as RM5 million was spent by the State Government in 2016 to clean the river.

“Hebat Abadi Sdn Bhd successfully removed 4,869 metric tons of floating rubbish until the end of September 2016 and 48 rubbish traps were built at main water locks along the Klang River. Five illegal landfills were detected as a result of the river cleaning operation,” Mohamed Azmin said while tabling the 2017 Selangor Budget at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly on October 31.

He said that the State Government is also considering establishing a river management agency to streamline the rehabilitation and development of the Klang River.

“The agency will be responsible for the preservation of the river reserve area and to prepare a river bank development plan as a source of new income for the state,” he added.
