Our Forest Programme, a Green Network to Balance Physical Development of the City

SHAH ALAM, 30 Apr: The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has taken the initiative to organise the ‘Our Forest Programme’ to promote awareness among the public on the importance of nature.

MPK’s Director of the Corporate and Community Department, Zaireezal Ahmad Zainudin, said that MPK, through the Parks and Recreation Department, is very committed in the aspect of local greenery.

He said that this includes the planting of trees to beautify the royal city, and at the same time, is committed in preserving the environment through co-operation from various parties.

“To date, the ‘Our Forest Programme’ has expanded throughout the country, with the involvement of schools, hospitals, recreation parks and mangrove forests,” he told Selangor Kini.

The programme, which is also jointly organised by Malaysian Landscape, in Taman Rakyat, Klang, also takes into account that forests are important natural treasurers, especially for the next generation.

It is being organised as an initiative to create awareness among the public on the importance of nature.

In relation to that, Zaireezal said that the people should always appreciate the importance of forests, in addition to creating healthy community development with the involvement of the community and to plant trees in the area together.

Zaireezal said that the ‘Our Forest Programme’ also acts as a ‘green lung’; one of the green networks to compensate for physical development in city areas.

“This programme aims to support the government’s commitment at the Climate Conference in Copenhagen in 2009 to reduce carbon dioxide by 40 percent by the year 2020, and the campaign to plant 26 million trees by 2014.

Also present at the programme was the Executive Councillor for Local Government, Studies and Research, Datuk Teng Chang Khim; the MPK Secretary, Ehsan Mukri and the General Manager of Malaysian Landscape, Othman Sulieman.
