PKR Election: 10 Selangor PKR Branches Cancelled, Re-Election to be Set Later

PETALING JAYA, 12 May: Re-elections in 10 PKR branches in Selangor will be forced to be held following various problems during the polling process held yesterday at the branches concerned.

These branches are Hulu Langat, Sabak Bernam, Sungai Besar, Subang, Klang, Selayang, Kota Raja, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor and Kapar.

The Chairman of the Central Election Committee (CEC), Datuk Johari Abdul, said that the CEC will only postpone the elections at branches found to really be problematic.

“We did receive a lot of complaints, but we will not cancel the election at the branches just because of minor complaints.

“Most of the cancelled elections involve many members, some branches reaching almost 6,000 members,” said Johari during a press conference held at the PKR headquarters today.

He added that the decision to cancel an election in any branch is made by the State Election Coordinator before being referred to the CEC if unresolved.

“Only election observers have the power to declare a cancellation, not the CEC,” he said.

Johari explained that re-elections at all 27 branches will be held at a date to be determined before the start of the Annual General Meeting, which needs to be held no later than November this year.

“We are not in a hurry, not to mention that the current leadership is still running legally. We will take time to give our members a chance to rest. When it is calmer, they can come back to vote,” added Johari.

The PKR Elections 2014 for the Selangor state level was held yesterday and the polling at 13 branches were tipped to be cancelled following allegations that there were irregularities in the polling process.

Apart from the 10 branches confirmed today, other branches said to face cancellation are the branches in Ampang, Kuala Langat and Sepang.
