SHAH ALAM, 5 June: The demand of the Minister of Federal Territories, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor, who wants educators to return to Barisan Nasional (BN) is hopefully not a threat to teachers.
The Executive Councillor in charge of Education, Higher Learning and HUman Capital Development, Dr Halimah Ali, said that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) does not want threats to be taken out on this group because teachers who serve as educators should not participate in politics.
She said that this is because it will interfere with teachers, in turn having impact on future development of human capital in students.
“I hope that this is not a threat to teachers. This can interfere with the work of teachers and we are well aware that their task is not easy because the country hopes for educators to develop human capital in students.
“So, if we want students to have good character, educators should not be interfered with or threatened with politics,” she told Selangor Kini today.
Halimah said that the move to invite educators to join BN is seen as being done in desperation in attempt to win votes in the next general election.
“It is funny when the Umno Secretary-General extended this invitation. However, I am of the opinion that teachers are smart and can examine whether BN is a good party or otherwise.
“BN has been given mandate for over 50 years, so they know if they have been good or not all this while. Can other parties defend the fate of teachers better,” she said.
She was responding to a statement by Tengku Adnan, asking educators to return to BN.
