Immediately repeal Sedition Act 1948, stop attacking PR leaders

SHAH ALAM, 28 Aug: The Federal Government has been urged to immediately stop prosecution and attacks against the leaders of Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

The Keadilan Youth (AMK) Chief, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, said that the Federal Government also seems to be deliberately biased in the use of the Sedition Act 1948.

Nik Nazmi said that the Act is not applicable against leaders who are pro-Barisan Nasional (BN), who clearly incite.

“Many leaders from BN, ISMA and Perkasa issued statements that are criminal in nature but no action has been taken.

“For instance, I made a police report against a statement by a leader of Perkasa, Ruslan Kassim, who wanted to behead four Selangor PAS Members of Parliament about two months ago, however no action was taken after my statement was taken,” he said in a statement.

In recent days, some PR leaders were charged under the Sedition Act or other laws, including the Member of Parliament for Pandan, Rafizi Raml; (PKR); the Member of Parliament for Shah Alam, Khalid Samad (PAS); the Member of Parliament for Padang Serai, N.Surendran (PKR); the Assemblyman for Seri Delima, RSN Rayer (DAP); the Member of Parliament for Seputeh, Teresa Kok (DAP) and the former Chief Minister of Perak, Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin (PAS).

In regards to that, Nik Nazmi, who is also the Selangor State Assembly Deputy Speaker, demands for the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, to fulfil his promise to repeal the Sedition Act 1948.

“If Najib truly wants to fulfil his promise, I urge him to immediately repeal the Sedition Act 1948, as he said.

“Stop prosecuting and attacking PR leaders immediately.

“With the elimination of the Sedition Act 1948, the people will no longer be persecuted just for expressing their opinions or criticising the government,” he said.
