SHAH ALAM, 15 Jan: The state government will take decisive action regarding the cases of illegal stakes in some areas around Selangor.
The Exco for Agriculture and Agro-based Industries, Zaidy Abdul Talib, said that the operation was carried out to eliminate the monopoly of cockle seeding at most coastal areas in the state.
“The operation was carried out by the Selangor State Fisheries Office (PPN) Resource Management Branch with the local fishermen from January 3 to 4.
“As many as 253 illegal stakes were taken out around the area of Kampung Banting, Sabak Bernam,” he said in a media statement.
According to him, on January 2, the State Fisheries Department meeting decided that the Selangor Fisheries Office, together with the Malaysian Fisheries Headoffice, carried out the operation to take out the illegal stakes.
It is so fishermen with licences are free to collect cockles and no more fishermen communities claiming that the area is their cockle farming area.
“To take out all the stakes along the coast, the Selangor PPN suggested for a quotation to be opened for that purpose. In fact, the Selangor State Fisheries Department will issue licences for the Sea Contour System (SKL) on January 13 and 14.
In addition, the opening of the Natural Cockle Seeding Area for the purpose of collecting cockles will begin from January 16 to 29, with the sizes of cockles reaching approximately 4mm,” he added.
The action is taken in reference to the grievances of the local fishing community on placing stakes along the natural cockle seeding area in Sungai Besar.
It aims to protect the area from being trespassed by fishermen from outside the area before the proclamation of the opening of the Cockle Collection Area is done.
