CM meets Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat to ask for recognition of the Opposition Leader’s role

KUALA LUMPUR, 10 Mar: The Chief Minister of Selangor, Mohamed Azmin Ali, paid a courtesy call to the Yang DiPertua of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia, in Parliament today.

Mohamed Azmin arrived at 2.05 pm and signed the Parliament guestbook before entering the main room for a brief discussion.

The meeting that lasted for 50 minutes is his first official meeting after being appointed the Chief Minister of Selangor last September.

Among the topics discussed included the position of the Opposition Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to attend the Parliamentary session.

“Because the Speaker issued the statement that Datuk Seri Anwar is still a valid Member of Parliament, therefore he remains the Leader of the Opposition that has been agreed upon by Pakatan Rakyat.

“As a Parliament that upholds the principles of democracy, it must recognise the role of the Opposition Leader in every session.

“I also expressed disappointment when until today Datuk Seri Anwar has not been allowed into Parliament while there are provisions that allow his to leave prison to go to the court in the lawsuit case against Datuk Hanifah Aman.

“Why is the Dewan Rakyat an impediment for him to go to as the Opposition Leader,” he said.

The Gombak MP also said that the Speaker will look into this matter before making a statement.

“Among others, we also discussed how to improve the performance of debates and proceedings of Parliament to make this institution truly credible because we still see there are actions outside the boundaries as MPs, like what happened this morning.

“I assure you, we stand by the principle to ensure that the Parliamentary session can go well.

“We also proposed for Bills to be tabled in Parliament to go through several subcommittees in advance or at the state level and any organisation related to it,” he said.
