SHAH ALAM, June 14: As an effort to democratise the Local Authorities (LA), the State Government has decided for all LAs to broadcast their monthly meetings live on their respective websites.

Local Government, Research and Studies Exco, Datuk Teng Chang Khim said that this move is in line with the State Government’s wishes to prioritise transparency and accountability in state administration.

According to him, this move will be undertaken by eight Local Authorities including the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ).

Also involved; the Ampang Municipal Council (MPAJ), the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS), the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) and the Sepang Municipal Council (MPSp).

“This action is taken as we had received complaints from the public saying that the LA do not perform their duties, and that they do not know what the councils do.

“So with the implementation of this project, the Councils will become more open and transparent and this is a great way for the people to understand about the administration of local authorities,” he said in a press conference after a meeting with the MBSA here today.

He said that the local authorities’ minutes will also be posted on respective websites, in line with the Stat Government’s spirit of approving the freedom of information enactment two years ago.

He added that the Council will be given three months to make complete preparations to ensure that this project runs smoothly when the time comes.

“Selangor will become the first state to implement this project when it is launched. We hope that the process will run smoothly.

Four other local authorities, Kuala Selangor District Council (MDKS), Sabak Bernam District Council (MDSB), the Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS) and the Kuala Langat District Council (MDKL), are unable to perform the effort at this time due to lack of money.

This project is contained in the Five-Year Action Plan for Local Council Standing Committees in Selangor (First Draft) which was certified by the State Government Council Committee (MMKN) last Wednesday.
