Braille-reading techniques are now accessible at Public Library

SHAH ALAM, 22 JUNE: The handicapped community (OKU) especially those who are visually impaired will have full access to Braille equipped reading materials and other facilities at the Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) in Shah Alam.

Managing Director of KL Braille Resources, Datuk Mah Hassan Omar, said the collaboration between the library and the company is for the benefits of the OKU community and to assist them in obtaining knowledge from reading materials.

The reading materials provided for the OKU community is placed in a special room on the second floor of the library.

“Our association assists those who are visually impaired by providing reading materials that they can read with the touch of their fingers. This is in line with our vision to provide knowledge, information and more benefits for the OKU community.

“Back then they would need to travel to Brickfields for the reading materials, but with the collaboration between us and PPAS we are able to bring the equipments and books to Shah Alam so the visually impaired community can access it,” he said.

He said so in a statement during a national level “Majlis Tilawah al-Quran Braille” programme held at Raja Tun Uda library here.

Mah said that besides PPAS in Shah Alam, the other facility that provides reading materials for the visually impaired is at the Ampang Waterfront branch of PPAS.

He also said that the latest project of the association is to print al-Quran that is specially encrypted with Braille readings so the visually impaired community can learn more from the holy book.

“There are many visually impaired individuals who would like to understand and learn more from the al-Quran but there is not much assistance for them. That is the reason why we took the initiative to provide these services for them.

“We are open to any government agencies, corporation or donors contribution to help us with the production cost of the al-Quran which will be given to the visually impaired community.
