Gavin Green Emerged Best National Player in Selangor Masters

PETALING JAYA, June 24: Yesterday, national golfer, Gavin Green became the best local golfer after completing the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters Championship with four strokes under par (68-69-70-73), five strokes behind tournament champion, Pariya Junhasavasdikul from Thailand.

Despite failing to win this championship, the high level of sportsmanship shown by Gavin received praise when he called for a penalty on himself at the 11th hole.

“On 11, my tee shot was in the bunker and then I hit it out to about 10 feet.

“I addressed the ball and the ball moved backwards. Nobody saw it but I saw it myself. It was a penalty. There was no hesitation,” said the 19-year-old after the tournament which was held here at the Seri Selangor Gold Club.

In the tournament, Gavin managed to come in sixth overall.

The second place went to Anirban Lahiri from India and Namchok Tantipokhakul from Thailand came in third.

In the event which which took place from June 20 to 23, Pariya emerged as the champion with a record 275 shots, eight under par, thus taking home the cash prize of RM216,000.

“Thanks to the Selangor State Government, and to Worldwide Holdings and PKNS for organising (this event),” said Pariya after receiving the prize trophy and the cash prize which was presented by the Tengku Panglima Diraja of Selangor, Tengku Sulaiman Shah Sultan Salahuddin.

Tengku Sulaiman was accompanied by the Selangor Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and State Government Executive Councillors.
