Selangor 10,000 steps programme, intensify efforts to encourage healthy living

SHAH ALAM, 3 June: The Selangor Government is intensifying efforts to encourage the public, especially the people of Selangor, to lead a healthy lifestyle through a variety of recreational activities to ensure they are free from any non-communicable disease.

The State Government has taken the initiative to launch the 10,000 Steps programme under the health portfolio, involving all 12 local authorities in Selangor to realise this desire.

The Executive Councillor for Health, Entrepreneur Development, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Daroyah Alwi, said that this is one of the State Government’s efforts to make the people of Selangor healthy by choosing the easiest, cheapest and risk-less activity.

She said that so far, five local authorities have implemented and have received encouraging support from the people since it was launched in February.

“We are restoring this programme even though it was launched by the Ministry of Health (MOH) two or three years back, but there was no continuity.

“So when I took over (the health portfolio), this should be carried out again as one of the health programmes for the people of Selangor, implemented through local authorities.

“When we started (this programme), the MOH became aware and wanted to carry out it again,” she said when contacted by Selangor Kini.

Daroyah said that the State Government also launched the ‘Cycling for My Heart’ programme, a leisurely cycling programme for all ages.

She said that the State Government is also currently planning a number of other programmes for the people of Selangor, involving healthy eating and healthcare.

“Many people are beginning to show interest and appreciate the programmes we have launched. For the second phase of the programme, we will focus on motivating and providing healthcare information, healthy eating, types of diseases with eating and a healthy lifestyle,” she said.

Previously, the MOH intended to continue to intensify the campaign on a large-scale to change the lifestyle of the people in the country to address non-communicable diseases.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam, said that the increase in non-communicable diseases is the highest in Asia and Malaysia, such as diabetes and psychiatric disorders among children and adolescents.
