UNISEL records history for hosting ‘Engaged Learning’ International Conference outside Europe

SHAH ALAM, 3 June: The University of Selangor (UNISEL) once again made history when they became the first Asian organisers for the ‘Engaged Learning’ International Conference.

The Executive Councillor for Education, Higher Learning and Human Capital Development, Dr Halimah Ali,said that the organisation is an effort by the State Government to popularise knowledge with current technological advances.

She said that the move to use information technology is seen as faster, more convenient and economical.

“But we want to ensure that this effort can be enjoyed by not only those in the city, but also people in rural areas and the less fortunate.

“We want everyone to be capable of obtaining accurate and timely information, in accordance with the changing times, where anyone who is quick and accurate can master a situation,” she said at a press conference today.

Earlier, she inaugurated the opening ceremony of the conference, which was also attended by the Vice Chancellor of UNISEL, Prof Anuar Ahmad, and the Chairman of the Asian Institute for Development Communication Malaysia (Aidcom), Datuk A.Kadir Jason.

The conference was also jointly organised with Aidcom and the support of the United Nationa (UN) through the United Nations Asian and Pacific Training Centre for ICT for Development (UN-APCICT) and Cornell University, the United States.

The conference was for the first time carried out outside Europe and 120 participants from 23 countries across the world, such as the US, Canada, Thailand, Kazakhstan and Korea took part in it.

The conference was first held in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2003, followed by Tunis, Tunisia (2005) and the last time in Madrid, Spain (2005).
