SEROJA helps tackle social cases at flats

SHAH ALAM, 21 Aug: The state government is practicing the Neighborhood Safety Patrol Scheme (SEROJA) to address social problems in low-cost flat areas in Selangor.

The Exco for Housing, Building Management and Urban Living, Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad, said that it is a programme being carried out by the Community Interactive Club (KLIK) in addition to the Pangsapuri Kita Bersih, Ceria dan Harmoni campaign.

“Under the SEROJA scheme, each development area will be allocated RM10,000 per year to buy equipment and to organise community programmes.

“The state government is also providing special provisions to channel contributions to volunteer residents who have died or suffered accidents while on patrol,” he said.

He said that for death cases, it involves an allocation of RM10,200, permanent disablement (RM10,000) while injury will be based on the actual medical costs with a maximum of RM2,000.

He said that patrolling is hard to carry out consistently due to present life scenarios based on the feedback received by the Joint Management Body (JMB) and the Management Committee (MC).

“The state government has improved by allowing JMB and MC to use CCTVs because it is the most relevant method in this modern era.

“JMB and MC have to provide information on the number of crimes that occur at their flats to the Selangor Housing and Property Board (LPHS) each month.

“It is important for an analysis on the effectiveness and improvement of the SEROJA programme from time to time, with the collaboration of the police,” he said.

He said that the state government is concerned about the matter for the benefit of all even though according to the Strata Ownership Act 1985 (Act 318) ownership of a strata development area is owned by all owners and they are responsible for maintaining and managing the building, including the safety aspect.

“The state government is providing special provisions for SEROJA and KLIK amounting RM1 million a year,” he said.
