Sungai Semenyih contamination cause identified

SHAH ALAM, OCT 4: Selangor Water, together with Selangor Water Management Board (LUAS) and Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), have identified the cause of the odour pollution in Sungai Semenyih Jalan Sungai Lalang, near Taman Sri Haneco, Semenyih.

Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs Exco Elizabeth Wong said MPKj had closed the site while awaiting the arrival of the Environmental Department (JAS) to take contaminant samples.

“We have not seen any workers on the premises since the morning of October 4,  when it was attributed to have caused the pollution,” said Elizabeth in a media statement.

She said MPKj and JAS have closed the premises to discontinue any activity and to conduct further investigations.

The case has been referred to JAS for further actions, including lawsuits.

“The provision under Section 25 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 allows for a maximum fine of RM100,000 and/or five years imprisonment upon conviction in a court of law,” she said.

She said local authorities will revoke all licenses and cease all business operations of companies or premises found causing pollution.

“Any appeal will not be entertained as the incident caused inconveniences to over 1.8 million consumers,” she said.

The quick action taken by LUAS and Selangor Water, who have been monitoring the area for 24 hours for the last 10 days, has helped to identify the cause of contamination.

Nevertheless, the Semenyih Water Treatment Plant has to be closed for the fourth time at 10 am due to odour pollution and resumed operation when the odour disappeared.

Areas experiencing water supply disruption include Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Sepang and Petaling.
