SHAH ALAM, August 22: The pressure which has intensified due to high rates of serious crimes and the failure of the security department to control the situation has caused the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to try and escape the real issue by involving the issue of traffic offenders.
Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar’s statement of wanting to revoke the licences of 1.7 million individuals who refuse to settle their arrears is a superficial statement and a suggestion that has not been thought out, said Member of Parliament for Ampang, Zuraida Kamaruddin.
She said that the proposal seemed as though the IGP is trying to run away from the fact that the public is in dire need of a security force that can control the increasingly scary criminal activities.
“Stop reckless statements. Do not blackmail the people. The IGP should conduct a thorough research so that the people are no longer burdened with various recent issues.
“These things actually have no research or studies conducted before being announced. (He should not have) easily issued this superficial statement before thinking about how it affects the people.
“The people will be burdened. The electricity tariffs and the GST will be implemented. The prices of goods will also go up. The people cannot afford to pay summons. And now, their licence will be revoked. Such things that burden the people have not been thought of.” said Zuraidah.
Speaking to TVSelangor, she said that the jurisdiction to blacklist a driver’s licence or even a vehicle can be passed to the proper parties, such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
“The IGP should focus more on comprehensive methods to curb serious criminal activity that is increasingly scaring the people instead of making suggestions that can be handled by other parties (JPJ).
Yesterday, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said that the action will be implemented due to dissatisfaction with the Ops Selamat accident statistics during the recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eid al-Fitr) season.
