Police: Stealing mailboxes can lead to 7 years in prison

SHAH ALAM, 19 Mar: The act of stealing mailboxes is just like any other criminal offense under Section 379 of the Penal Code and is punishable with a maximum of seven years in prison or a fine or both, said the Subang Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Yahya Ramli.

“Stealing mailboxes is indeed bothersome to the people and may cause their documents to be unsafe because the mailbox cover is stolen.

“Typically, mailboxes made of steel are stolen to be sold at scrap metal sales centres. It is an offence to steal outside the premises and if convicted, one can be jailed for seven years,” he said when contacted by Selangor Kini today.

Yahya said that the issue of mailbox theft can be reduced by establishing cooperation among local residents who are sensitive towards suspecting strangers.

“Usually there are security guards at condominiums or apartments. Residents and associations can cooperate with security guards.

“This is similar with opened apartments. Being attentive can curb not only mailbox theft but also other property, and the police will monitor scrap metal sales centres,” he said.

However, Yahya mentioned that until now, the Subang Jaya police have not received any specific complaints regarding mailbox loss.
