MPSJ waiting for UPM’s approval to build 2 retention ponds for flood mitigation

SHAH ALAM, 1 June: The Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) is now just waiting for approval from Putra University, Malaysia (UPM), before the two retention ponds for the Seri Serdang Flood Mitigation Project to be built and upgraded.

This is because the retention ponds will be located within UPM and requires permission and approval from the management of the public institute of education for the implementation.

The President of MPSJ, Datuk Asmawi Kasbi, said that several identified projects have to be implemented to curb recurring floods in Sri Serdang and Serdang Jaya.

The construction of the retention pond was identified by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) as a long-term preventive measure.

Other projects include the upgrading of the drainage system in Sri Serdang, the deepening of Sungai Kuyoh and the building a pump house at Seri Kembangan.

He said that he has written a letter to UPM to seek permission to allow the DID to enter the area to build and upgrade the existing reservoir.

“DID and the council cannot freely enter UPM’s area. Discussions have been conducted and the application is being considered.

“The UPM Board of Directors will decide whether or not the project can be carried out on the five acres of land,” he said, quoted from Sinar Harian.

With its construction, it is estimated that it will be able to accommodate the excess rainwater from the Federal Territory and Kajang, through Sungai Kuyoh.

Asmawi informed that the flood mitigation project in Seri Serdang involves three agencies, including the DID, MPSJ and the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), at an estimate of RM8.7 million.

Because there are no specific funds, MPSJ clearly needs to make a loan from the State Government.

“The loan agreement matters have been completed. We are now only waiting for the provisions to be channelled,” he said.
