CM: 4G telecommunications across Selangor generates state income

SHAH ALAM, 11 June: The Selangor government will soon set up a 4G telecommunications system in the state that will provide residents access to free wireless Internet (Wi-Fi).

The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that the State Government will present the plan to Members of Parliament and Assemblymen in the near future.

He said at the moment, they are tweaking the working papers of the plan.

“We will soon invite them and other parties involved to listen to the state government’s briefing of the plans.

“The working paper is complete but we need a little time to finish setting it up before the system can be implemented,” he said at the conclusion of the State Budget 2015 Dialogue held at the Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC).

The latest technology involved is the Optical Distribution Antenna System (ODAS); a 4G telecommunication service which will be implemented throughout the state.

Abdul Khalid said that the State Government, as law makers, needs to make a specific policy.

He said the policy would provide the public with free Wi-Fi while generating income for the state government through renting out telecommunication structures.

“If it is implemented, it would give free Wi-Fi services to all of the rakyat in Selangor, including closed circuit television (CCTV),” he said.

Science and Technology executive council member Dr Daroyah Alwi predicted that the state government would rake in billions of ringgit from the project in the next seven years.

She said that state authorities and mosques would generate income from renting out the structures.

“Moving the structures from the rooftops to the lamp posts will change the landscape of the Wifi network in this state.

“As landowners, the state government must seize this opportunity to generate income by renting out the telecommunication structures that we suggested to the telco firms,” said Daryoah.
