GERAMM: Let’s ‘Have Fun’ at Today’s Red Pencil Protest

SHAH ALAM, 4 Jan: At the rally to protest against The Heat’s suspension in Kuala Lumpur, the organisers have reminded the public and media practitioners to be in solidarity, thus covering the event.

In a statement, the Angry Media movement (GERAMM) also announced that a few well-known activist leaders of NGOs and elected representatives have confirmed their attendance as a sign of support.

“We also urge those attending to laugh and have fun together in the heart of the city with us during the event today,” said GERAMM.

The “Red Pencil Protest” agenda is to read eight demands of GERAMM, read poetry, have speeches by activists and media personalities, as well as the special event where they will together break pencils as a sign of the death of press freedom.

Media practitioners and the general public are encouraged to wear red and bring a red coloured pencil.

Meanwhile, GERAMM said that today’s’ rally will run smoothly and provocation and partisan political slogans are not allowed.

“Slogans should all be towards media freedom and not to provoke certain parties,” the statement added.

The Red Pencil protest is scheduled to begin at 2pm today at Dataran Jam Leboh Pasar Besar in front of the Bar Council in Kuala Lumpur.

It aims to protest against the government’s move to suspend The Heat, to demand for media freedom and to have a detailed re-investigation on violent incidents against journalists during the BERSIH 3.0 assembly.
